At White Box we’re all about boldness and breaking new ground. If we are to shift big, systemic issues like unemployment for marginalised communities in Australia, we need to think and do differently.
This is why one of our key strategic priorities is leading innovative systems-change initiatives to advance jobs-focused social enterprise in Australia. We truly believe employment has the power to change lives. We collaborate with government, corporates, philanthropy and social enterprise, seeking out those who share this belief, and together we ideate, develop and innovate together.
Payment By Outcomes (PBO)
In collaboration with Department of Social Services, White Box co-designed and is now delivering Australia’s first Payment By Outcomes (PBO) trial for jobs-focused social enterprise. The three-year $3.8M landmark trial is exploring the effectiveness of jobs-focused social enterprises in delivering long-term employment outcomes for people living with a disability.
This is the third PBO trial under the Australian Government’s Social Impact Investing Initiatives, yet the first to involve impact investment. We’re proudly supported by with Macquarie Group Foundation, Tripple and Hand Heart Pocket Foundation, and are working with 15 social enterprises across Australia to bring this trial to life.

Sustainable Employment
Loan Fund (SELF)
Access to capital is one of the biggest barriers to growth for jobs-focused social enterprises. White Box is creating a Sustainable Employment Loan Fund (SELF) - a $5M patient capital fund - designed to bridge the gap between social enterprises and impact investors. The fund will provide up to 20 social enterprises with flexible, low-cost finance that will allow them to scale and grow their business to create more jobs for those who need them most.
This initiative has been made possible through the support of Westpac Foundation, who have been with us from the very beginning.
Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF)
In 2022, White Box Enterprises hosted the largest social enterprise conversation in the world – the 2022 Social Enterprise World Forum. On 28-29 September 2770 delegates (in-person and virtually) representing 93 countries came together for SEWF22 in Meeanjin, Brisbane for two incredible days of learning, inspiration, and connection.
We partnered and collaborated with 34 organisations across multiple sectors to deliver this legacy event for the social enterprise movement in Australia.
